Reframing printmaking as radical and utterly contemporary

Reframing printmaking as radical and utterly contemporary

Hot Bed Press is a not-for-profit print studio promoting print as a vital, contemporary medium built on traditional principles.

Post-pandemic, the company had experienced an increasing demand for its printmaking facilities and courses. Consequently, Hot Bed Press commissioned us to help take its brand and business to the next phase.

The Hot Bed Press proposition hinged on how a traditional discipline was now reframing itself as an alternative communication medium prepared to challenge established perceptions.

The Hot Bed Press proposition hinged on how a traditional discipline was now reframing itself as an alternative communication medium prepared to challenge established perceptions.

We focused first on the company's brand manifesto, articulating its purpose and principles as a powerful call to action and reconciling its two-handed traditional and radical approach. We drew on print's history of radicalism and capacity to challenge current norms — its ability not just to move with the times but, on occasion, to dictate the pace of change.

The Hot Bed Press brand manifesto showcased a nine-point plan for progressive print and formed the bedrock of the brand’s subsequent design and development, including the company’s website.

The brand design adopted fundamental facets of print, incorporating basic cyan, magenta, yellow and black colour-blocked themes and images, highlighting print's physical virtues in a digital context.

We applied two of our fundamental branding components: Bedrock and Toolkit — to articulate the brand’s values and philosophy and translate them into a distinctive visual and verbal identity.

At its core, this is a collaborative approach. We look behind the brand to get to its raw essence — why the business exists and what it wants to achieve. Then we distil this knowledge and insight into a concise brand manifesto and key brand messages.

Simultaneously, we explore the brand’s visual identity, coordinating this with the verbal language we’re developing.
