Creating a unique brand management system

With long-established businesses and practices, rebranding isn’t simply a case of out with the old and in with the new. Rather, it’s about finding the correct balance between all the business has built and what it aspires to.

Randall Thorp is a landscape architecture consultancy with over 30 years of placemaking experience. The practice wanted to update and future-proof its brand and consolidate its authority in the market.

Talking to the Randall Thorp team, it became clear that we would need to clarify key elements of the business offering while highlighting the brand's essence as it already existed.

Branding is functional, not simply decorative. It should also be adaptable to create consistency across all touchpoints via customer management systems.

Arctangent is an established alternative music festival. The company was looking for a new brand identity and website. Our two key issues here were appealing to the diversity of the festival’s audience and creating a website to manage the event more effectively and efficiently.

Whereas Arctangent knows what it represents, it attracts different subcultures under its alternative umbrella. Consequently, the brand identity needed a broad appeal without losing its alternative edge.

Whereas Arctangent knows what it represents, it attracts different subcultures under its alternative umbrella. Consequently, the brand identity needed a broad appeal without losing its alternative edge.

We applied two of our fundamental branding components: Bedrock and Toolkit — to articulate the brand’s values and philosophy and translate them into a distinctive visual and verbal identity.

At its core, this is a collaborative approach. We look behind the brand to get to its raw essence — why the business exists and what it wants to achieve. Then we distil this knowledge and insight into a concise brand manifesto and key brand messages.

Simultaneously, we explore the brand’s visual identity, coordinating this with the verbal language we’re developing.ntity with firm, cultural roots, clearly connecting it with its local area.

Adapting previously written brand manifesto content for Arctangent, we juxtaposed contrasting fonts to sit alongside the client’s specially commissioned artwork for the festival site. The idea was to ensure images and text sat sympathetically together, bolstering the brand identity and messaging.

Behind the scenes, we built a customised website powered by specifically developed components and integrated with a streamlined and simplified content management system.

This gave Arctangent a low-maintenance but highly efficient online marketing and event management tool that reflected and projected its unique festival brand.

As an added benefit, Arctangent can also use this system to manage its other major event brand, Trees festival.
